This course focuses on the social and personal meaning of disability and chronic illness. We will explore definitions and conceptual models for the study of disability, the history of disabled people, bio-ethical perspectives, the depiction of disability in literature and the arts, public attitudes, and legal and social policies. The course will investigate the interaction of disability with social factors such as gender, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, and class. The course is for students with and without disabilities, and may be of special interest to students preparing for careers in the health professions, education, law, architecture, social work, or gerontology.

This introductory seminar explores the core principles and practical skills of journalism, emphasizing responsible storytelling, news gathering, and multimedia reporting. This class will include readings and critical discussions on media coverage of the topic; analysis on the reporting efforts to cover stories within this topic; and discussion on the ethical dilemmas faced by reporters, the role they play in shaping the public’s understanding of this issue. The goal of this class is to instill a sense of journalistic literacy among Freshman/Sophomore populations, both to make them better citizens with a well rounded understanding of news production, as well as presenting them with a sampler for those who may wish to pursue a journalism minor or professions in a communication/storytelling sphere.

CHICANO 50AC - LEC 001 Introduction to Chicano History more detail
This course introduces the history of ethnic Mexicans in the United States. This includes a discussion on what is considered the “long 16th century” or the period roughly between the late 1400s up until the 1650s, the construction of race and racial difference during the colonial, Mexican, and US period, the formation of the Mexican Borderlands in the 19th Century, and the formation of a Chicana/o identity during the latter half of the 20th century up until the present. Through this course, we will explore important currents that have shaped the experiences of Mexican communities in the U.S., including ideas of race, gender, and class, processes of cultural adaptation, community formation, state violence, and migration, just to name a few.

This course will explore the philosophical evolution of human rights principles in the realm of political theory and the influence of such principles as they have transformed into a coherent body of law. We will focus specifically on issues in international human rights law; the approach will be both thematic and comparative. Topics will include but are not limited to: human rights diplomacy; the influence of human rights in international legal practice; cultural and minority rights; genocide and the world community; cultural relativism and national sovereignty; international law and international relations; individual and collective rights; migration, labor, and globalization; and national, international, and nongovernmental organizations.
