Course Catalog Description
Freshman and sophomore seminars offer lower division students the opportunity to explore an intellectual topic with a faculty member and a group of peers in a small-seminar setting. These seminars are offered in all campus departments; topics vary from department to department and from semester to semester.
Class Description
This introductory seminar explores the core principles and practical skills of journalism, emphasizing responsible storytelling, news gathering, and multimedia reporting. This class will include readings and critical discussions on media coverage of the topic; analysis on the reporting efforts to cover stories within this topic; and discussion on the ethical dilemmas faced by reporters, the role they play in shaping the public’s understanding of this issue.
The goal of this class is to instill a sense of journalistic literacy among Freshman/Sophomore populations, both to make them better citizens with a well rounded understanding of news production, as well as presenting them with a sampler for those who may wish to pursue a journalism minor or professions in a communication/storytelling sphere.
