Class Description
You have been learning amazing skills in the classroom and beyond -- now learn the skills to succeed in the workplace beyond just the technical work. This course will introduce you to the non-technical dimensions of success that will support your career advancement and help you become a great employee and a future leader. Some people call these “soft skills,” and some people call them “human skills.” Either way, they can be a challenge! Coursework will focus on self-awareness, communication, and understanding organizational structures and systems. Class time involves experiential exercises meant to give you greater understanding of yourself, others, and methods of working together. You will gain tools, customized to your own strengths, that provide you with increased confidence in your ability to work with others, to gain influence, and to achieve recognition in your work environment and career. These tools and frameworks will enable you to:
-Learn, articulate, and maximize your unique, individual strengths
-Clarify what you need to be successful in a new job
-Build trust with colleagues in order to increase influence
-Give and receive feedback
-Understand and cope with imposter syndrome
-Give effective presentations
-Work effectively on a team
-Understand workplace biases and be a more equity-fluent leader
-Understand what to expect from organizational evaluation and reward systems: performance reviews, professional development, and salary adjustments
This course welcomes those still searching for internships or full-time employment. Note: You may take more than one 198 class per semester.
