Course Catalog Description
A compact seminar features a distinguished instructor, usually a visitor from Scandinavia, with expertise in topics related to Scandinavian Literature and Cultures. The seminar is intended to teach these topics in an intensive format and to complement regular departmental offerings. A series of short papers or a single, longer paper is required.
Class Description
In this compact seminar, we will focus on specific methods for dealing with literary texts for Humanities study. Although most of the examples will be drawn from English language corpora, the methods will apply to most modern (and some non-modern) languages. The majority of the work will be done in Python and R, although there will also be an opportunity to work entirely in a "low touch" or "non coding" environment. Topics cover will include data discovery (literary texts as data); data cleaning and preparation; word frequencies and simple visualizations; simple classification problems using supervised and unsupervised methods; topic modeling. Additional topics may include stylometry, text-reuse, and the relationship between image and textual data. No coding or prior background working with digital texts is required.
Class Notes
Prerequisite: graduate standing or consent ofinstructor.
