Course Catalog Description

Reading and composition in connection with the representation of Scandinavia by outsiders and insiders. Satisfies the first half of the Reading and Composition requirement.

Class Description

The concept of the female gaze is a feminist film theoretical term that represents the perspective of the female viewer. In this class, we will explore gender, class, sexuality, and artistic expression in literature through the lens of the female gaze. We’ll examine various expressions, restrictions, and expectations of love and desire at the intersection of romanticism and realism. How do we define the female gaze? Is the female gaze a revolt against the male gaze, or its own definition? Can male writers have a female gaze? With these questions in mind, this course invites students to think about limitations – real and imaginary – regarding self-expression and experience. We will read works by Nordic writers Victoria Benedictsson, Karen Blixen, Tove Ditlevsen, Tarjei Vesaas, Knut Hamsun, Hjalmar Söderberg, Tove Jansson, and others about obsession, desire across distances, and relationships that defy convention. Students will gain understanding of relevant literary concepts as well as develop skills in critical reading. Class discussions and exercises will help students in expressing and structuring their thinking in writing. The emphasis will be placed in the process of editing a first draft into an argument. All texts will be made available in translation. R1A satisfies the first half of the Reading and Composition requirement.
