Course Catalog Description

Advanced seminar in Chicanx and Latinx Studies with topic to be announced at the beginning of each semester.

Class Description

This course is two-fold. It examines and celebrates the resiliency of black and brown students to navigate, confront, and succeed in a schooling system rooted in white supremacy and as a continuum to white settler colonialism by conducting community-engaged research and reimagining this social institution to serve our communities. This course also explores the process of decolonizing academia and working collaboratively with the community to conduct research providing an opportunity for greater trust and respect to be built between academia and our communities. Course participants will learn key considerations when setting out to begin community-engaged research (i.e., decolonizing ourselves to decolonize academia) and hear perspectives from a myriad of seasoned researchers and community members on how to make research more inclusive. Course participants will be exposed to a range of research and engagement methods appropriate for use in community partnerships including more traditional methods of qualitative and quantitative research, including developing dashboards. Group projects will allow students to apply these techniques and focus on learning by doing, devoting a good portion of class time to workshop the application of these tools in practice.
