This course surveys modern Japanese fiction and poetry in the first half of the 20th century. Topics will vary.

No prerequisites. No knowledge of Japan required. Japan 173 explores aspects of Japanese short narratives told through a variety of media: traditional short stories, lyrics, animation, and manga. The narratives to be read, listened to, or viewed for the the course are selected by the students. After an initial class segment of aspects narratives aspects, the remaining ten weeks of the term are spent presenting and discussing ten short narratives.
