Course Catalog Description

The goal of this course is to acquire the knowledge and skills needed to approach public health problems from an equity or health justice perspective. Students will acquire mapping and spatial analysis (spatial epidemiology) skills and apply them in the context of structural inequity, health disparities, and racial justice. Geospatial skills are applied to public health problems that demonstrate differences in health exposures, risks, and adverse outcomes for BIPOC or economically disadvantaged individuals living in the US as well as those in low and medium income countries as compared to high income countries.

Lectures for this class are recorded and posted in bCourses. Students are expected to watch the lectures
before working on the weekly hands-on tutorials. Discussion are offered “live” via zoom. Students are
expected to attend these “live sessions” or watch the recording. Proof of either real-time attendance or
viewing the recording is required by submitting a screenshot, and graded.  Students have the
opportunity to work on the weekly hands-on tutorials, in 210 Wheeler Hall Computer Lab, on Thursdays,
between 12 noon until 8 pm. Students may come and go during that time, depending on computer
availability. Alternatively, students may use a virtual machine (for Mac users), or load the software onto
their own PC. For the Wheeler lab sessions, the instructor and/or TAs will be present to answer
questions, assist on the weekly assignments and term projects.  Use of the Thursday lab times are
encouraged, add to the student experience and promote success, but are not required nor graded.
Note: students may choose to both attend the Wheeler lab and work on a VM or their own PC. show less
