Course Catalog Description
Continued study of African dance found within Hip Hop and African American dance genres. Continued, and deepening, focus on footwork/patterns, articulation of spine/isolations, rhythmic structures, dynamic movement qualities, and the historical, political, spiritual, and social aspects of these forms.
Class Description
This course assumes students have studied dance for at least one year (African, Hip Hop, modern, contemporary, etc.) Specific steps of Central and West African religious and social dance forms will anchor this course, particularly the movements retained in the footwork of Hip Hop freestyle, House, Stepping, Lindy Hop, Tap, New Orleans Bounce and Second Line. Students will learn the different footwork techniques African Diasporic dance forms employ to achieve sublime musicality and finesse. Students will also work through complex rhythms and footwork patterns in addition to learning of the historical, political, spiritual, and social aspects of the dance forms learned.
