Course Catalog Description
Continued development of dance techniques. Study of body articulation and control utilizing concepts of time, space, and dynamics.
Class Description
This intermediate course assumes students have had at least one year of dance technique. Students should have a good sense of alignment for African diasporic dance, as well as modern and contemporary dance, and musicality. This course will focus on Dunham (Haitian), Silvestre (Brazilian) and Talawa (African and Caribbean) Techniques. All of these systemized techniques are based on codified classical African dance traditions that captive Africans retained despite the one of the most heinous periods in world history—the transatlantic slave trade. Through these techniques students will acquire the kinetic and spiritual intelligence to more easily access the various African diasporic movements borrowed by modern and contemporary dance. Students will learn the authors, evolution, spirituality and political implications of the techniques.
