Course Catalog Description
Seminar for the advanced study of the subject matter of a previously given upper division course, emphasizing reading and discussion.
Class Description
In this undergraduate seminar we will explore the capacity of art and aesthetic processes in general to enable spaces of healing, for persons and collectivities, in the confrontation with trauma and loss, and in the experience of mental pain. In turn, we will reflect on the way art and aesthetic forms (whether in the plastic arts, poetry, image-making, literature, film, or music) in their inception have a close relationship with the primary affects and the experience of trauma itself.
The seminar is conceived in conversation with an exhibition I am co-curating at BAMPFA around related themes (and that will open in October). Alongside readings and discussion in class, students will be encouraged to experiment with writing or artwork in their assigned projects.
