Course Catalog Description
The Berkeley Seminar Program has been designed to provide new students with the opportunity to explore an intellectual topic with a faculty member in a small-seminar setting. Berkeley Seminars are offered in all campus departments, and topics vary from department to department and semester to semester. Final assessment to be decided by the instructor when the class is offered.

This seminar will focus on viruses that originate in animal populations but can make the transition to cause disease in humans. This seminar will focus on viruses that originate in animal populations but can make the transition to cause disease in humans. We will discuss the SARS CoV-2 virus that causes COVID-19 and SARS CoV-1 but also discuss Ebola and other viruses that have caused human infections. The course will begin with lectures by the instructor to introduce virology and immunology. The remainder of the course will be group work and student-led discussions of specific scientific papers about these important viral pathogens.
