Course Catalog Description

The study of different approaches and contemporary methodologies for analyzing performances of various kinds within their cultural and historical context. Specific methodologies can include archival research, field methods, etc. The specific focus in any one course is contingent upon the focus of the instructor.

Class Description

Focusing on both archived and empirical evidence, this class provides students with an introduction to a variety of approaches to advanced performance studies research. First, we will analyze theories of the archive, and practices of documentation. The course then moves toward the study of embodied evidence and how that evidence is bound to relational systems of the senses, perception, material, culture and memory. Readings and assignments are generally organized around sensory perception with the premise that activating these senses may expand the possibilities and ways of approaching performance in its context. Finally, students will become acquainted with tools of the trade, issues in ethics and legalities, writing methods for research proposals and practical problem-solving in performance research. The course includes both project assignments and analysis and discussion that address new directions in research methods.
