Class Description
This course examines how theatre and performance influenced major shifts in political power in the American hemisphere from the mid to late 20th century to the present. We will focus on Latin American and Latinx theater in North America including plays by Carmen Aguirre, Enrique Buenaventura, Emilio Carballido, Román Chalbaud, and Griselda Gambaro, as well as the methods and performance works of El Teatro Campesino, Jesusa Rodríguez, and other renowned theater collectives and performance artists of our time. Students will expand their creative and intellectual breadth of understanding in performance studies, while learning contextual histories of theatrical productions regionally and globally.
