Course Catalog Description
Coverage of major movements and genres in the intellectual context of the times. Readings in Russian.
Class Description
This course will explore the phenomenon of Russian Modernism understood in its broadest chronological sense: beginning at the end of the 19th century (with the dawn of Russian Symbolism in its dialogue with Realism) and ending in the mid 20th century with a discussion of Late Russian Modernism and various “extensions” of Silver Age literature and culture. Among the authors and texts that we will discuss will be: Sologub’s Melkii Bes, Bely’s Petersburg, Kuzmin’s Wings, Rozanov’s Opavshie List’ia, essays by Marina Tsvetaeva, Vladislav Khodasevich, Elena Guro, and Evgenii Shvarts, among others, as well as various works of poetry and of literary criticism. We also will consider visual and performance components of the Silver Age epoch, and look closely at the institutions and publications of this period.
