Course Catalog Description
A survey of the writer's principal artistic works, treated in relation to his life and to developments in Russian and European literature. Extensive outside reading required for this course.
Class Description
Our course will explore works by Fyodor Dostoyevsky, one of Russia’s most significant, complex, controversial and exciting 19th century authors and thinkers. Readings will include Dostoyevsky’s short fiction, his novels “Crime and Punishment” and “The Idiot”, and his various experiments in non-fiction, including his memoir of prison life “The Dead House”, and fragments from his writer’s diary. We will also watch and discuss film adaptations of Dostoyevsky’s works and read some of the most influential scholarly takes on them. All our readings, screenings will be in English.
