Course Catalog Description

Surveys the music and music making of different world cultures outside the United States, with a focus on current issues in the arts, culture, and society. Such issues can include the impact of government polices on the arts, transnational circulation, intellectual property rights, as well as the current movements in the arts ranging from popular styles to cutting-edge contemporary experimentation. The particular culture to be studied will vary.

Class Description

This introductory survey course explores the sounds, histories, modes of engagement, social and political aspects involving some of the more prominent musical practices of Brazil. The course aims to acquaint students with some of the practices that contribute to the multiplicity of Brazilian musics; investigate the conditions that contribute to the emergence of these musics, and develop basic knowledge of musical concepts, terminology and listening ski tis so you may describe and analyze different types of musics.
