Course Catalog Description
Selected readings in the <Iliad> or <Odyssey>.
Class Description
In this course we will read together selections of the Iliad in Greek (and the entire poem in translation). We will develop our abilities in reading Greek (with attention to the particular elements of Homeric language and grammar), and discuss the key thematic concerns and formal features of the epic poem. Our discussions will include the Iliad's treatment of justice, emotion, violence, community, gender, mortality, politics, cosmic order. Written assignments for this course include quizzes, a midterm, final exam, and short interpretive essays. Completion of Greek 1 and 2 or their equivalent is a pre-requisite for the course; completion of Greek 100 or its equivalent is recommended.
