Course Catalog Description
This introductory course surveys the history of modern Latin America from independence to the present, with a strong emphasis on the twentieth century. Our focus will be on broad transfomations in politics, place, identity, and work.
Class Description
This course is an introduction to the history of Latin America since the end of Spanish and Portuguese colonialism. The course will cover many topics, but we will follow three main storylines: first, the political and economic trends that have shaped the region since the late colonial period; second, histories of race and citizenship in Latin America; and third, the region’s relationship to the United States and other parts of the world. Lectures will be complemented by deep readings of primary and secondary sources, critical viewings of films, and section discussion.
