Course Catalog Description
This course will focus on the development of film art, technology, and industry in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Class Description
This course provides an advanced introduction to the history of the cinema, from the end of the nineteenth century to World War II. We will focus on the development and institutionalization of film aesthetics and industry practices, struggles over censorship, the emergence of narrative forms, genres and international styles, questions of technological change, and the implementation of various modes of production and forms of spectatorship in Europe and the United States.
