Catalog Course Description

An introduction to central topics in the philosophy of language, for example the nature of linguistic meaning, the relation of meaning to truth and reference, knowledge of language, the relation of language to thought, pragmatic aspects of linguistic communication, and skepticism about linguistic meaning. Some previous background in philosophy and logic is required.

Summer Term

7.5 hours of Instructor presentation of course materials per week and 20 hours of Outside Work Hours per week and 2.5 hours of The exchange of opinions or questions on course material per week.

Fall Term

3 hours of Instructor presentation of course materials per week and 8 hours of Outside Work Hours per week and 1 hours of The exchange of opinions or questions on course material per week.

Spring Term
