The Language of Cinema

Offered through Film and Media
About this Course
Catalog Course Description

In this course, students who are declared film majors will begin to explore more actively the specific language of the medium itself. Each student will participate in a semester-long program in which rigorous close viewing, analysis, and discussion of films and videos will eventually lead to a more personal engagement with the process of film or videomaking. Each member of the class will learn the most essential elements of the two technologies by exploring the application of camera, sound, lighting, and editing. Drawing on their previous experiences in narrative, documentary, and avant-garde film, The Language of Cinema will give students a deeper, more integrated understanding of the complex relationship between the visual and aural elements, the methodologies and the codes of cinema.
