Class Description
We are now in a world where science, technology, and data-rich computing practices are fundamental to our sense of selves and the spaces we inhabit. This course introduces you to the methodological and analytical issues in knowledge-making among physical sciences. Course readings will ask you to reflect on what social and political arrangements are mobilized through specific technological objects – from smartwatches to sex robots – that are becoming distinctive features of advanced societies. We will also explore data-rich practices like self-tracking or cloud infrastructure and how these shape circuits of knowledge, power, and truth today. This course meets the Human and Social Dynamics of Data and Technology requirement of the College of Computing, Data Science, and Technology. The goal of the course is to use interdisciplinary perspectives available to us from Anthropology and Science, Technology and Society (STS) studies to grapple with what it means to be human in the contemporary world.
