Group study of a topic not included in the regular department curriculum. Topics may be initiated by students under the sponsorship and direction of a member of the Spanish and Portuguese department's faculty.

The “Taller de escritura creativa en español” Decal is a student-run course for undergraduate and graduate students interested in creative writing in Spanish. Students will participate by writing their samples and learning how to engage in peer-review feedback. The course will be divided into two phases. Phase one will be an exploratory phase where we (as a group) will do preliminary work to get acquainted with the different modes of writing— short fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, and playwriting. We will be reading primary and secondary texts to help us develop an understanding of each genre. In phase two, which consists of the majority of the decal, we’ll be dedicating two consecutive weeks to exploring the different genres with prompts to help run our creative pieces. During the first week of each genre, we will start off with phase 1– defining the genre. Consecutively in week 2, we will be starting phase 2 of that genre in which we will reserve most of the class time for writing individually. If the student does not finish the work during class, it will have to be finished as homework. The final draft has to be turned in before the next class. During the third week, the class will be spent giving feedback and sharing. The goal is to create a space where we can all work on our craft using class time. We will implement what we learned from phase 1 by writing creative pieces of short fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry, and playwriting, diving deeper into each genre. We will present our writing to the rest of the class for review and feedback. This student-led class is designed for advanced Spanish speakers, as the reading, writing, and discussion will be in Spanish. Facilitator approval is required to enroll in this course.
