Course Catalog Description
In the context of inter-Scandinavian communication, students will further develop their communicative competence, their reading and writing proficiency and cultural understanding in their own target language (Danish, Finnish, Norwegian, or Swedish). Oral and written midterm and final exam.
Class Description
This course teaches intermediate Danish. Students will further their communicative competence in all four foreign language skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing) within a cultural context. We will also explore Danish society and popular culture by watching films and reading newspapers and magazines, to further students’ abilities to interact with cultural competence and understanding, and we will discuss how Danish language skills can be used beyond the classroom.
Please note you must enroll in both the Wednesday lecture and the target language section to fulfill course requirements.
FIELD TRIP: The Danish section includes a 3-day excursion to Seattle on October 26–28 2023 with the purpose of visiting the University of Washington and the Nordic Museum and meeting other Danish students from across the US. Students enrolled in Scandin100A section 101 can apply for funding to cover expenses, including transportation and accommodation. Participating in the excursion is highly encouraged, but non-mandatory.
