Course Catalog Description

Reading and composition course based on works by Italians and foreigners about Italy and its culture and by Italians about their distinctive experiences of other cultures as tourists and emigrants. Works studied will be primarily chosen from among fiction and non fiction narratives, both originally in English and translated into it. R5A satisfies the first half of the Reading and Composition Requirement and R5B satisfies the second half.

Class Description

Games and reading seem like an unlikely pairing. Perhaps you, reader, have been instructed to consider them as entirely different activities. Nevertheless, games hold a significant presence in literature and culture starting in the late medieval period and extending to present day texts and media. Our study will begin with Giovanni Boccaccio’s Decameron to consider the purpose of games in narrative and leisure. How do games articulate narrative? How do traits that we associate with games, like structured rules or fleeting chance, emerge in a text? How does class, gender, and language become inscribed through games? In addition to Boccaccio, texts and media will draw from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll, The Castle of Crossed Destinies by Italo Calvino, Stories for a Year by Luigi Pirandello, among others. This class fulfills the university’s second semester requirement for Reading and Composition. As such, this is a writing-intensive course that focuses on building an essential skill: the research paper. Initially, assignments will focus on close reading and literary analysis. Over the course of the semester, we will work on developing persuasive and complex written arguments by incorporating secondary sources and criticism into academic prose that you compose. Other compulsory writing activities may include journal entries, revision, and peer review.
