Course Catalog Description
Three hours of lectures, readings, and discussion per week on major authors, themes, and movements in Italian literature.
Class Description
In this discussion intensive course, we will embark on a journey through the worlds of major Italian contemporary writers. Over the course of the semester students will read three novels in Italian by internationally acclaimed authors, and then watch the film/tv series adaptations of these novels, analyzing the ways in which characters come to life, and stories masterfully unfold, both in their writing and in the screen adaptations.
We will delve into themes such as coming of age, adulthood, friendship, abandonment, violence, memory, language, gender and class, female identity, authorship. Students will be encouraged to draw from their respective fields of study and linguistic repertoires to draw comparisons and to analyze topics discussed in class from a wide range of perspectives
Readings and written assignments will be both in Italian and English while class discussion will be primarily in Italian. Class discussions are a very important component of the course and students are expected to participate actively at every meeting. Short written assignments (500 words) will be due weekly. The final assignment will be a longer paper (2000 words).
