Water tenure includes legal and customary (informal) arrangements regulating the relationship between people and water resources. Such arrangements differ in the way water rights are defined and whether they are held by individuals, communities, the State, or other entities. This course will examine the existing literature on this topic, and investigate the extent to which formal laws and regulatory instruments recognize customary water tenure arrangements. Students in the class will focus on a set of countries and engage in a deep analysis of their water tenure regimes.
