Course Catalog Description
Research-oriented and designed for upper-division English majors. Intensive examination of critical approaches, literary theory, or a special topic in literary and cultural studies. Topics vary from semester to semester. Students should consult the department's "Announcement of Classes" for offerings well before the beginning of the semester.
Class Description
An intensive research seminar exploring the relationship between urban landscapes and postcolonial literary cultures. Readings in theories of postcoloniality and diaspora as well as explorations in architecture and city planning will accompany close examination of novels, films, and music. Weekly written responses and in-class workshopping will build incrementally toward a final comparative research paper on a Bay Area city in relation to one of the seminar's major texts.
This class satisfies the Literatures in English requirement for the English major.
While English 100 is a prerequisite for English 190, students who are exempt from this requirement (see https://english.berkeley.edu/undergraduate/the_major) will be able to enroll automatically.
