Course Catalog Description
Advanced study in various subjects through seminars on topics to be selected each year, informal group studies of special problems, group participation in comprehensive design problems, or group research on complete problems for analysis and experimentation.
Class Description
This seminar/reading group discusses what it means to be a PhD student or researcher. It focuses on the often undiscussed psychological, emotional, and political themes that you will face as a junior researcher.
The class meets once a week for an hour and will take the form of a discussion group supplemented with weekly (short) readings.
Topics discussed include: "maybe research is all made up", "the myth of the lone scientist", "funding in academia" and the "advisor relationship".
