Course Catalog Description
Reading and composition in connection with the representation of Scandinavia by outsiders and insiders. Satisfies the second half of the Reading and Composition requirement.
Class Description
This R&C course will look at the complex relationship between self, others, and surroundings in Scandinavian literature through the lens of love and desire. It will explore how landscape and setting impacts social, political, and emotional aspects of character and plot in a variety of texts such as Victoria by Knut Hamsun, Doctor Glas by Hjalmar Söderberg, and short fiction and poetry by Karen Blixen, Tove Ditlevsen, Karin Boye, Tomas Tranströmer, Tove Jansson, and others. It will also draw upon secondary scholars such as Turchi, Tuan, and Naess. Students will learn skills in conducting academic research as well as learning the foundations for examining and discussing aspects of literary analysis from an environmental perspective. Students will be expected to write one short essay at the beginning of the term (3 pages) as well as two longer essays as the term goes on. The first of these will be six pages, and the second will be ten. Students will also be expected to participate in class discussions and conduct peer review.
