Course examines current problems and issues in the field of public policy. Topics may vary from year to year and will be announced at the beginning of the semester. Open to students from other departments.

The Security in Politics DC Immersion Week is a three unit elective course and travel seminar that combines several papers with a one week immersion seminar that takes place over Spring Break 2024 with former Secretary of Homeland Security, Janet Napolitano. The course is designed for students to gain an understanding of security policy, how security issues are mitigated and handled by security professionals across industries, and how security threats to our democracy and infrastructure can be better managed and addressed across sectors in Washington D.C. and abroad. The pedagogy will be readings and two (2) brief paper assignments before the week in D.C. so that you will be prepared to absorb, learn, and analyze the immersion week. As part of the immersion week you will have lectures by the instructor and you will take part in a full week of meetings, panels and visits with industry representatives, academics, Congressional staff, and policymakers in the White House, the Department of Homeland Security, the State Department, the FBI, and the CIA among others. You will also experience a few special and unique DC evenings, including a Moonlight Monuments tour, a private reception and fireside chat with esteemed guests, and a final dinner at a unique Washington, D.C. location. The immersion week will conclude with an onsite crisis simulation exercise. A final presentation and participation in a final wrap up session at GSPP will also be required. This course is open to all UC Berkeley students, with a limited number of spots for undergraduates available. Students from all departments on campus are encouraged to apply. Priority will be given to students who are pursuing an area of security studies as part of their degree and to those who are interested in pursuing a career in public service. At the request of our partner agencies, all enrolled students must be U.S. citizens. Enrollment in this course is limited. Completion of an enrollment application is required. Applications are due on November 1st (see below for the application). You will be notified of your application status no later than November 10, 2023. Students who are accepted into the course will be given a unique enrollment number to add the course to their schedule. Note: All students enrolling in this course will need to adhere to the following schedule: Friday, February 2, 2024, 11:30am - 1pm: Intro Session at GSPP 105 Friday, March 8, 2024, 11:30am -1pm: Prep Session at GSPP 105 Sunday, March 24 - Saturday, March 30, 2024: D.C. Immersion Week Friday, May 3, 2024, 11:30am - 1:00pm: Wrap Up Session at GSPP 105 You should not apply for or enroll in this course if you will not be able to participate in the full schedule as outlined above. Housing, catering, and ground transportation costs in Washington, D.C. will be provided, as well as a stipend for travel to and from D.C.
