Class Description
This course examines the birth of “modern” Persian fiction following the encounter of Iranian modernists in the pre-constitutional period with the West. The new form and content of fiction in this period depart from classical prose to reflect the desire for social and political change in Iranian society. We will read satire, drama, traveloges, and stories by influential thinkers such as Akhundzadeh and Jamalzadeh followed by novels by Sadeq Hedayat, Simin Daneshvar, Mahmud Dowlatabadi, etc. with scrutiny of the historical context. Advanced Persian literacy is required.
