We are offering two sections of Music 90 in Spring 2024, and they have slight differences. Please read the descriptions below to determine which section suits you best. Both classes require a basic understanding of music theory, including scales and intervals at the very least. If you don't have a foundation in basic theory, we recommend taking Music 20 before enrolling in Music 90. If you have any questions or need assistance, please email: Professor Ahn (ahnjean@berkeley.edu) or Professor Melford (mmelford@berkeley.edu).

Professor Ahn will be hosting several drop-in placement advice sessions during the week of January 8, 2024, for those who are unsure about which section of Music 90 to sign up for.

SECTION 1 taught by Prof. Jean Ahn
MWF 11:10am - 50 minutes

Emphasis on basic music skills, such as sightreading, dictation and score reading. The class has some collaborative projects in mid semester and one composition project as a final.

SECTION 2 taught by Prof. Myra Melford

TTh 12:40pm - 80 minutes

Focus on creating music, performing, and improvising, along with an introduction to the opportunities for creative music research and music making offered by the Music Department. This section is suitable for students who already possess technical proficiency on their instrument/s or voice and, at least, a solid basic knowledge of music theory.

FAQ

1. Will Music 90 always offer these two different choices?

This is specific to the spring semester. While Prof. Ahn consistently teaches Music 90, Prof. Melford may not be teaching every semester. We encourage you to take advantage of the opportunity to enroll in her class this term!

2. Which section awards better grades?

Both sections will award A or A- grades to students who diligently complete assignments and actively participate in collaborations.

3. I am strong in music theory and can fluently play written music. However, I have never done improvisation. Can I still take Prof. Melford’s class?

Absolutely! If you are proficient in basic music theory and can play your instrument well, you can learn improvisation in Prof. Melford’s class.

4. I am a singer, and I need to practice sight-singing. However, I would also love to engage in improvisation and music-making with others. What should I do?

If you are a singer, especially if you are aiming to join the chamber choir, we highly recommend you take Prof. Ahn’s class. Choir director Wei Chang has specifically requested that students improve their sight-singing skills for choir participation. Prof. Ahn’s class will still provide you with opportunities for collaboration and improvisation, although it may not be the primary focus of the course. show less
