Class Description

This section of English R1B will consider the particular ways in which fiction can explore questions of body, mind, and identity, and of how these adapt in times of crisis and change. The course will involve reading, writing, re-reading, and re-writing. We will approach the process of writing as one that can help with thinking and understanding as well as with communicating clearly. Reading will focus on three novels by speculative fiction writer Octavia Butler. With the help of a selection of critical and historical essays, we will consider Butler’s stories through lenses including disability, race, and gender, and in the context of events in US history. We will discuss the relationship between story-telling and argument both in Butler’s novels and in the essays we read. Over the course of the term, we will also talk about how to develop compelling interpretive arguments of your own. In addition to shorter writing exercises, you will plan, draft, peer-edit, and revise two essays including a final research essay.
