Training in writing expository prose. Further instruction in expository writing in conjunction with reading literature. Satisfies the second half of the Reading and Composition requirement.

The year 2024 is in the realm of the speculative; we live in the era that has for so long been “the future.” In turn, science fiction has been having its moment as it permeates popular culture, posing questions of identity and social constructs such as race, gender, sexuality, politics, disability, and technology, particularly as the Internet presents them to us. These hypotheticals come from real historical contexts within the genre of science fiction throughout the 20th and 21st centuries. In this course we will be exploring short stories, novellas, novels, and films since 1920 to 2024, such as W.E.B. Du Bois’s "The Comet", Derrick Bell's "Space Traders," Ursula Le Guin’s "Those Who Walked Away from Omelas," N.K. Jemisin’s "Those Who Stay and Fight," Ann Leckie’s Ancillary Justice, Martha Wells’s Murderbot, along with others.

Requisites

• Previously passed an R_A course with a letter grade of C- or better. Previously passed an articulated R_A course with a letter grade of C- or better. Score a 4 on the Advanced Placement Exam in English Literature and Composition. Score a 4 or 5 on the Advanced Placement Exam in English Language and Composition. Score of 5, 6, or 7 on the International Baccalaureate Higher Level Examination in English.
