Course Catalog Description
Studio experience in analysis, policy advising, and implementation in an urban setting. Students will engage in group work for real clients (e.g., community-based organizations or local government agencies), culminating in a final report or proposal.
Class Description
This unique studio course will provide an opportunity for UC Berkeley CED undergraduate and graduate students to serve as co-researchers and mentors for local youth to improve physical/environmental, social and educational conditions for K-12 students experiencing homelessness (SEH). Core to this will be working with the California Homeless Youth Project (CHYP) as a primary “Client” to advance a new, statewide Homeless Youth Bill of Rights. As part of the State of California Research Bureau (CRB), the CHYP is committed to bringing youth to the policy table and informing policymakers, opinion leaders, and other stakeholders about the needs of homeless and highly mobile youth. This studio will engage university and high school students in the design and development of a Bill of Rights.
Using the nationally recognized Y-PLAN methodology, UC Berkeley students will partner with local classroom teachers and their students in Oakland and Sacramento to co-design innovative and implementable solutions to improve current conditions and opportunities for students experiencing homelessness. Studio undergrad and grad students will serve as mentors and will work collaboratively with state, regional and local leaders forming a powerful community of practice throughout the duration of the studio. The shared goal is to identify and address a range of social and environmental challenges and needed solutions for improving the physical/environmental, social and educational needs of homeless youth— with local specificity and ownership. These insights will form a set of recommendations and a final deliverable to the CHYP and other clients to inform future development and implementation of a California K-12 Homeless Youth Bill of Rights.
As studio mentors, CP 268/190 students will engage in an estimated 15 hours of fieldwork over the course of the semester. The studio mentors will work with high school students at the Law and Social Justice Academy at Oakland High School and at one high school in Sacramento City Unified School District (SCUSD) to a lesser extent (and virtually).
Fieldwork will be on Fridays - enrolled students will have to sign up for 6 - 8 Friday sessions between Feb 9 - April 12 (not every Friday available)
Two sections will be available
Section 1 => 1:00 - 2:00 pm
Section 2 => 2:30 - 3:30 pm
Students should plan 30-minute travel to and from Oakland High School
Friday, April 19: Y-PLAN Youth Bill of Rights Summit at UC Berkeley
Studio students will need to attend at least part of this day as they will be co-developing this event with the LSJ students and state leaders.
