Course Catalog Description
This course explores special topics, based on current research and interests and is focused on at least one global region. Using a social science perspective, students will engage in critical thinking about the way in which a particular region, or subset of a region, interacts with other states and societies.
Class Description
The Gulf States seemed impermeable to the 2011 Arab uprisings but behind the scenes saw regional developments as both threat and opportunity. This course examines the Gulf States: Saudi Arabia, UAE, Kuwait, Qatar and Oman; and their roles in an ongoing struggle for the heart and soul of a region. Themes explored include: governance, succession, sectarianism, Iran, Islam and the state, intra-gulf conflicts, gender, security and energy.
