Course Catalog Description
Study of speculative fiction (or science fiction) as a genre. Topics may vary from semester to semester. Focus may be historical or thematic.
Class Description
“Not real can tell us about real.” This is one of the fundamental lessons learned by a new race of genetically engineered transhumans in Margaret Atwood’s 2003 novel, *Oryx and Crake*. It is also one of the underlying principles of science fiction. In this course, we will explore some of the landmarks and lesser known way stations along the evolution of this diverse genre, attending to the cultural and political implications of its brave new worlds and the creatures in them. We will attend in particular to the ways that science fiction pushes at the limits of human knowledge: What is our place in the universe? What makes us different from machines or animals? What can the future tell us about the present day or the historical past? In reading stories about aliens, robots, androids, clones, and zombies, we will ask ourselves: what does it mean to be human?
The readings for the course haven't yet been finalized, but they will include one or two novels, many short stories, and several movies or TV show episodes. In addition to the assigned readings and viewings, assignments for the course will include frequent bCourses discussion posts, two short essays, a creative project, and a final exam.
