Varying topics covering current discoveries, research, theories, fieldwork, etc., in biological anthropology. Topics vary with instructor.
Class Description
Thanks in large part to television programs like Bones, CSI and crime books/novels (e.g. Kathy Reichs’ The Bone Code),
forensic anthropology has become heavily popularized in the public eye. But despite this popularization, much of forensic
anthropology, and what separates and links it as a discipline and practice to other forms of anthropology, are not often well
addressed. This course is desgined as an introduction for students interested in demystifyingand familiarizing themselves with the practice of forensic anthropology. As a specialized field of biological anthropology, forensic anthropology employs many technique and approaches found within anthropology and beyond, including excavation (archaeology), identification and analysis of human skeletal remains (osteology), cause of death (toxicology), and presenting
findings in a medico-legal context (law and medicine).
