Class Description
Berkeley’s Computer Science curriculum and Business curriculum trains many graduate and undergraduate students with a high level of technical and theoretical ability. However, UC Berkeley is only ranked 4th by the number of founders who raised more than $1M based on a report from Crunchbase.
Decode Silicon Valley Startup Success bridges the gap. We teach startup intelligence. Our curriculum consists of having guest speakers from top entrepreneurs, executives of top companies, and investors, and also hands-on assignments and projects to help students build their portfolio. By the end of our course, students will be able to:
● Understand what it is like to be involved with a startup
● Learn best practices for early stage startups and mistakes to avoid
● Evaluate which early stage startup is good to join, invest or get more involved with
● Gain better awareness of how you can best plug into the startup ecosystem
● Build your domain expertise in a particular sector or industry
● Be self-aware to whether they are better suited to be a founder, an early stage startup employee, a growth stage startup employee, a big tech employee, or an investor
Students can enroll in the course even if they aren’t planning on starting up. Lots of concepts and skills about entrepreneurship are highly transferable to other aspects of career development.
Open to all majors. No requisite requirements. However, this course is meant for students who are serious about developing their career in a field related to startups, and will require you to step out of your comfort zone and dedicate hours outside of class.
For students who are dedicated and have specific asks for guidance around topics that cannot be googled, DECODE offers mentorship with top industry experts and leaders to assist you with that. We also help with referrals to startup programs (YC, 500global, Techstars, OnDeck, Skydeck, etc) for selected students who have at least incorporated and are past the ideation stage.
