Course Catalog Description

This course will focus on the writing of a full-length theatrical work. A more critical analysis of the playwriting process with particular emphasis on how a playwright’s aesthetic and intellectual point of view inform the work. Instructor approval is a requirement for the course.

Class Description

This course admits a limited number of students to allow for a seminar style methodology. Admission is based on your writing sample (see Class Notes). Students will come prepared with new scenes to read each week. The student and other class members will offer thoughts on the student’s work. The class will be required to read and discuss plays with emphasis on themes of diversity, inclusion, equity, and belonging. This class is open to everyone.

Entry to the class is by instructor approval. To be considered for the course, submit a work of fiction (up to 5 pages) to the instructor by August 15 for Fall or January 10 for Spring. Email: joeozu@berkeley.edu. Include your name, year, major.
