Course Catalog Description

In the context of inter-Scandinavian communication, students will acquire the oral proficiency necessary to function in authentic situations of language use with respect to grammatical, functional, and sociolinguistic skills in their own target language (Danish, Finnish, Norwegian, or Swedish). Students will read and interpret literary and nonliterary texts from a cultural cross-cultural perspective. Oral and written midterm, a final project, and a final oral and written exam.

Class Description

This class is a continuation of SCANDIN 100A (taught in Fall) and consists of language classes twice a week in addition to a weekly lecture in which we will probe into Nordic languages and cultures. Whereas the fall semester emphasized the entangled linguistic histories of Danish, Swedish, Norwegian, and Finnish and the codevelopment of these languages, the Spring semester will focus on some of the shared cultural experiences and values of the Danish, Swedish, Norwegian, and Finnish speaking regions of the Nordics. By broadening the scope of your knowledge about Nordic cultures and values, the Wednesday lecture aims to provide a foundation for you to interact with cultural competency in your chosen target language. The target language sections will focus on developing your communicative competence in all four foreign language skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing) within a cultural context. In the final part of the course, you will be asked to conduct an interview in your target language with a native speaker and analyze your interview data using theoretical concepts and perspectives you have been introduced to in the Wednesday lecture. This project will allow you to bring together competencies developed within the context of both the Wednesday lecture and the target language sections. Students should register in the 100B lecture in addition to the relevant section they will attend. The course is complete with the language and the lecture sections – you must enroll in both parts in order to fully enroll in the course. If you experience a scheduling problem it is essential that you consult the language coordinator. Students should enroll in the relevant target language section as follows: Section 101 = Danish Section 102 = Finnish Section 103 = Norwegian (cancelled for Spring '23) Section 104 = Swedish.
