Class Description
In Psychology, reasoning is mostly studied as an individual activity. However, homo sapiens is a hypercooperative species, and so much of our thinking is actually adapted for social purposes. In this seminar we will read and discuss empirical and theoretical texts that focus on reasoning as a social activity (also sometimes referred to as collaborative cognition). In particular, we will focus on how young children from different cultures learn to engage in collaborative cognition (e.g. how they learn to exchange reasons), how they benefit from thinking with others, and, finally, how thinking in groups can sometimes lead otherwise rational individuals astray (focusing on so-called motivated cognition).
