Course Catalog Description

Group study of a selected topic or topics in Public Policy. Meetings to be arranged.

Class Description

Course Title: Applied Policy Lab This class serves as an introduction on how to analyze, research and change public policy. No prior experience in public policy is required and students are not expected or required to be majoring in social sciences. Students will complete the course with portfolio pieces including policy memos, sample policies and action plans. This course has only four assignment due dates and limited synchronous sections. Students will be allowed to pick a social issue topic of their choosing with guidance from facilitators, and spend the semester exploring it. This will include identifying the relevant policies and jurisdictions that affect it, researching potential policy solutions and alternatives, planning advocacy campaigns, drafting policy memos and writing sample policies. Class sessions will be mostly asynchronous with synchronous discussion sections interspersed throughout. Alternatives will be provided for students unable to attend synchronous discussion sections. Students will be able to enroll for 1 to 3 units depending on their interest level, with different levels of work and expectation for each.
