Course Catalog Description

Reading and composition course based on works by Italians and foreigners about Italy and its culture and by Italians about their distinctive experiences of other cultures as tourists and emigrants. Works studied will be primarily chosen from among fiction and non fiction narratives, both originally in English and translated into it. R5A satisfies the first half of the Reading and Composition Requirement and R5B satisfies the second half.

Class Description

This course examines how literature and film have depicted travel as a form of study, from the 19th century Grand Tour to the institutionalized concept of “Study Abroad” on US campuses today. We will focus on depictions of travel, how new senses of self emerge within new linguistic and cultural contexts, and will also consider a few examples of travel (with an emphasis on travel to/from Italy) in 20th century literature and film. This is a writing-intensive course and fulfills the second half of the Reading and Composition University Requirement. Since our focus in this class will be to hone our analytical reading and writing skills, assignments are designed to give students practice in developing their own interpretive claims about the meaning of a text in an engaged, creative, and productive way. Students will be asked to complete short writing assignments as well as one midterm essay and one longer research paper. Most all papers will be revised, and students will be asked to regularly share their work and comment on the work of their fellow students to aid in the revision process. Texts and films will be chosen from the following list: Florence in Ecstasy, Jessie Chafee Room with a View, E.M. Forster Waiting to be Heard, Amanda Knox Clash of Civilizations Over an Elevator in Piazza Vittorio, Amara Lakhous The Talented Mr. Ripley, Anthony Minghella The Girl at the Door, Veronica Raimo A course reader will also be available with shorter works (poems, short stories, essays, and translations) by: James Baldwin, Ta-Nehisi Coates, Jhumpa Lahiri, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Ernest Hemingway, Ezra Pound, Elizabeth Bishop, John Ashbery, Dante Alighieri, and Arthur Rimbaud.
