Class Description

This course is for Berkeley EECS researchers who are curious about what it takes to create a world-changing company. Berkeley EECS researchers have led the creation of industry-defining technologies (e.g. BSD, TCP, RISK, RAID, Spark), as well as iconic technology startups (e.g. VMWare, Apple, Nicera, Inktomi, Sun Microsystems, and Tesla). Topics will include: Translating research projects into market opportunities Finding initial users and reaching product-market fit Finding co-founders, understanding key business functions and roles, and setting company culture Fundraising Choosing an open source strategy (where appropriate) ...and much more. The course will be taught by Berkeley EECS faculty and graduate alumni who have created successful companies. Classes will include lectures, discussions, guest speakers, and assigned readings. A semester-long class project focuses on identifying and validating users and their pains.
