Class Description

Disability and Performance: Moving through a diverse array of performance texts from theater, to dance, to film, and television, this class will examine the representation and lived experience of disability in performance. We will begin by examining the historical representation and exploitation of disabled people on stage as part of circuses or “freak shows” in western culture. Further, students will come to understand the differences between the medical model versus the social model of disability and the ways in which different frameworks shape societal perception and stereotypes of disability. Utilizing a Black feminist disability framework, we will consider the ways in which disability intersects with race and gender and chart the critical reception of the disabled body on stage and the screen. In all, we will use course materials to collectively imagine the ways in which performance has the potential to be a pathway for greater inclusion. This course meets the second half of the University’s reading and composition requirement; it is designed to hone students’ reading and writing skills as they relate to research. Students will work on drafting, rewriting, and peer editing in addition to participating in in-class workshops. Students will develop a final research project and paper in relation to the course material.
