Course Catalog Description
Special Topics courses offer students opportunities for more concentrated focus beyond general curriculum offerings. Courses may align with an instructor’s own research, they may propose topics responding to contemporary events and issues, or they may offer a specialized skill. Primarily intended for advanced undergraduates and graduates in Art Practice but open to others.
Class Description
This course encourages multiple approaches to writing, emphasizing how climate crisis and recent social reckonings around racial and gender equity have placed new expectations on art and its criticism. Students can enroll from any major and without prior experience of art or art history. We will consider “art” in its broadest sense, from museum and gallery cultures, to public and online interventions, and to what lies beyond current conventions. The course will be practical and theoretical, engaging with art directly, and will provide in-depth training for art interpretation, writing reviews, and longer essays.
Class Notes
Priority enrollment in reserved seats for declared and intended Art Practice majors. Instructor maintains a waitlist outside of CalCentral. If you need to request one of the reserved seats, or wish to be added to the waitlist, please contact the instructor directly.
