Course Catalog Description
This course is an introduction to Japanese modernism through the reading and discussion of representative short stories, poetry, and criticism of the Taisho and early Showa periods. We will examine the aesthetic bases of modernist writing and confront the challenge posed by their use of poetic language. The question of literary form and the relationship between poetry and prose in the works will receive special attention.

Fall 2021: In this course we will read works of modern Japanese literature through the lens of queerness and sexuality. We will examine short stories, poetry, and novels to examine how writers use language and formal techniques to explore questions of the body, identity, pleasure, and community. We will also look at some theoretical and historical approaches to the study of sexuality in Japan. Prerequisites: Japanese 100A (may be taken concurrently).
